As the class 434DD 4-8-4s were receiving their Raymond Loewy shrouding, the RSR's publicity department was drawing up the specification for the matching rolling stock. Shown here is the 1st class compartment coach from this series. Its modern features include air-conditioning, power points in all compartments, separate ladies' rooms, four reclining seats per compartment with fully retractable tables, movable compartment walls to provide accommodation for larger parties of travellers and push-button and voice-recognition controls for the outside doors (the latter caused much trouble - and amusement - at first by responding to station announcements and other extraneous sounds). The interior decor was classical 1930s Art Déco in pastel colours with silver trim. Each coach carried the name of an American city. Trains loaded at first to six or seven coaches but the totally unexpected demand for the new services soon led to twelve-coach formations. These were, of course, well within the capacity of a 434DD.
