Class 423Q 2-8-4T (1926)

Class 423Q 2-Cylinder Goods Tank Locomotive

Designed by Bela Šahlmeti ca.1926

Karel Belčamin, it seems, was not the last RSR engineer to leave behind plans for engines that were never built. Several drawings were found in Šahlmeti's filing cabinets, including this 2-8-4T, which was in effect a stretched version of the 323B, the running gear being adopted more or less unchanged. A Kraus-Helmholtz bogie is provided at the front end. Whether such a locomotive was needed on the RSR in the mid 1920s is questionable (Šahlmeti's rebuilds of the Belčamin 0-8-0s were doing good work, ably supported by the D6A 4-8-0s) and the slim boiler would certainly have proved as inadequate as that of the 323B. It seems that Šahlmeti realised this himself and in the same year produced the fatter-boilered design shown below, which was classed 423QQ. The same question would very likely still have hung over its usefulness, though.
